Position Description: Job Summary:

SMU Libraries is excited to post a new position, Director of Administrative Services, offering the opportunity to apply expertise in business, finance and human resources for a robust library organization. Reporting to the Dean of SMU Libraries, and serving as a member of the Dean’s Cabinet, the Director of Administrative Services provides leadership, oversight, and coordination for the SMU Libraries financial, organizational development, facility, and administrative services. The director works closely with the Dean of SMU Libraries, associate deans, and library directors to provide sound human and fiscal resource allocation strategies that align with university policies and procedures, advance library priorities, and create a positive work environment.

SMU is a nationally ranked private research university in Dallas, Texas with eight degree-granting schools. SMU Libraries includes six libraries on the main campus and one library at our satellite location in Taos, NM.

Essential Functions:

In close consultation with the Dean, adopt and oversee sound financial and fiscal policies in library resource allocation and planning. Work with the Director of Strategic Initiatives to create new means for sharing high-level metrics to library leaders for thoughtful and timely decision making across all library activities and for required reporting.
Oversee operations and continuous improvement in library human resource management for all SMU Libraries, including coordination of staff hiring, evaluation, performance management, development, and promotion. Coordinate all activities with the libraries’ SMU Human Resources partners. Sponsor the Student Worker Managers team to guarantee communication of policies and procedures related to student employment across the libraries.
Coordinate organizational development best practices for SMU Libraries, including serving as executive sponsor for the Libraries Education and Development (LEAD) team and leading efforts directed to achieving the Organizational Excellence goal in the Libraries Strategic Plan. Develop opportunities for staff engagement, professional development, and serve as an organizational effectiveness resource to all library teams. With the Director for Strategic Initiatives, critically assess the culture through regular climate evaluations and integrate practices that ensure strong evidence of a commitment to an inclusive workplace.
Establish a holistic administrative service portfolio for the Office of the Dean in close coordination with other members of the office suite.
Supervise a small team of support personnel.
Serve as primary administrative contact for all facilities projects and spending. Conduct annual emergency assessments for the university and serves as the primary administrative contact for emergency preparedness across libraries.
Participate in appropriate professional development activities and organizations to stay current with trends and practices in the field.

Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university
Minimum of three (3) years of related full-time experience in the areas of accounting, business administration, human resource management, and/or finance
Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience
Experience developing reports that effectively convey complex information
Commitment to inclusive workplace practices

Preferred Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in business, accounting, organizational development, organizational psychology or other field related to this position.
Masters in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution or Masters of Business Administration or other relevant field.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive responsibility in an academic library or academic environment including leadership experience with personnel, budgeting or organizational development.
