Position Description: Under general direction to provide information services (electronic and print) to library users. The position is self-motivated, exercising independent judgment in answering questions and assisting patrons with electronic resources. Performance is evaluated by review of plans, programs, and reports.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises direct supervision over professional, technical, and clerical staff as well as, volunteers.

Examples of Duties
Assists customers in obtaining general, detailed and research information from a variety of print and electronic resources.
Participates in the selection of new and replacement library materials for adults. Participates in the collection development process by purging obsolete and/or worn materials.
Orients and instructs the public in the use of print and electronic resources to find needed information. Assists the public in the use of the library's online public access catalog (OPAC), and other computer equipment to search online databases via the Internet.
Plans, conducts, and evaluates adult and young adult programming as needed and assigned.
Creates educational programming and resources to provide patrons with limited computer skills assistance with completing tasks such as resumes, cover letters, and applications. Orients and instructs the public in developing search strategies to locate needed information. Trains the public in the use of computer search strategies, including keyword, browsing, wild card, and Boolean searching. Assists patrons with developing technologies such as streaming and downloadable applications.
Prepares and develops bibliographic and database indexes and brochures to encourage and help the public find needed information in print and electronic formats. Develops advertising for library programming and services as needed.
Plans, coordinates, and conducts presentations to interested groups on various general topics of public interest inside and outside the Library reflecting the resources and services of the library.
Provides reader's advisory assistance for adults and young adults.
Works in collaboration with other City departments, library branches, and community agencies.
Participates in the selection and updating of Internet resources in support of the Library's homepage. May also edit web pages and update social media sites on behalf of the library.
Prepares and maintains book displays.
Scans the horizon for latest trends and needs in public service.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of modern library operations as applied in a public library.
Current materials, technology and developments in periodicals, newspapers, and electronic services.
Current mobile and digital platforms.
Basic reference sources and good research techniques.
Informational and recreational reading interests.
ALA guidelines for public services.

Skill to:
Provide strong customer service to patrons.
Operate and apply basic troubleshooting procedures on a variety of computers, digital devices, printers, and OPAC's.
Operate Microsoft and Google office software. Experience with Sirsi/Dynix Library systems is helpful for this appointment

Ability to:
Work one-on-one with patrons with minimal computer skills.
Work with patrons on a variety of digital devices, laptops and lab computers on various mobile and digital platforms.
Organize work and coordinate activities.
Demonstrate use of public access catalog, Internet resources, and electronic information resources.
Use good judgment and effective communication with patrons to provide appropriate service.
Assist readers in selection and interpretation of print and electronic resources.
Deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.
