Position Description: GENERAL PURPOSE
This part-time, temporary position is responsible for assisting in all aspects related to the administration and development of Library services for the Town of Highland Park, including technical processing, programming and public service. Acts as Children's Librarian three days per week.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Town Librarian.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May exercise general supervision over temporary or other staff as needed and assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Acts as the Children's Librarian three days per week.

Participates in all phases of responsibilities to assure quality service to patrons in person and by phone, including but not limited to providing assistance at public service desks and assisting with collection development for the juvenile and young adult collections.

Represents and promotes the Library, its services and programs by working closely with Library clientele, local schools, community, public, private and voluntary organizations and agencies.

Plans, develops, implements and administers Library programming for community and patron needs; determines program format, budget and resource requirements; implements marketing and outreach efforts; recruits and trains necessary volunteers; coordinates projects and event logistics; maintains cost-effective programming.

Responsible for Baby Lapsit programming on Wednesday mornings.

Implements projects and instructions as assigned.

Interprets and ensures compliance with both Town and Library policies and procedures.

Provides reader's advisory and reference service to assist the public in selecting materials to meet reading and informational needs using electronic and print resources.

Initiates and suggests ideas for the successful completion of work.

Tactfully and pleasantly informs the public of Library policies.

Develops input for the budget and administers services within budget restrictions.

Travels to attend meetings, conferences and training.

May perform other related functions as assigned.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Attends seminars, webinars and workshops to update and improve skills and knowledge.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality as required by state law. Ability to prepare budgets, provide reports, and deal courteously with the staff and public. Effective oral and written communication skills, knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of Library service. Ability to determine priorities and to coordinate activities to accomplish objectives. Basic understanding of cataloging principles. Ability to organize own work without close supervision. Proficiency in the use of computers and related equipment, hardware and software. Typing skills equal to 30WPM. Through knowledge of the English language. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, to function effectively as a team member. Ability to take direction willingly, and give direction clearly. Ability to cooperate and communicate with people, ability to deal tactfully and courteously with people. Must pass pre-employment drug screening, criminal background and reference checks.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification
(A) Master's degree in Library or Information Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association: M.L.S, M.L.I.S or similar Master's degree.
(B) Three years of experience as a professional librarian performing Public Library work

Preferred Qualifications
(A) Experience in working with youth, children's programming.
(B) Knowledge of current trends in library services to youth and their parents and caregivers.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Typewriter; telephone; photocopier; printer; scanner; calculator; Television monitor/VCR; CD player; printer/scanner; a variety of computers; DVD player; electronic book readers; and others. Library automated system.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for long periods of time while assisting patrons. Will need to shelve books and other Library materials at all heights from floor level to approximately 84" above the floor. Must be able to transport multiple Library materials from room to room, and from the first floor to the second floor and push and pull book carts that can weigh over 100 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 35 pounds of Library material.
