Position: Temporary Inventory Associate

Position Description: The Printing Museum (TPM) seeks a talented and motivated candidate who would like to gain experience in museum inventory and cataloging. Under the supervision of the museum curator and collections manager, the new hires will be responsible for inventorying the museum’s Reference Library, which was partially damaged by a fire in May of 2016.

Hours: 35 hours per week (Monday-Friday 10:00am – 6:00pm)
Dates: October through November with possibility to extend
Location: The Printing Museum, 1324 West Clay Street, Houston, Texas, 77019

Duties Include:

• Entering object information and condition notes into Past Perfect, the museum’s collection management database system.
• Photographing objects and condition images, as well as systematically uploading and organizing images.
• Assigning a temporary inventory or catalog number to the items.
• Creating and maintaining object and vendor documentation and files, as needed.
• Unpacking and re-shelving reference library materials and collection items.
• Rehousing items as necessary.

Required Education: • Bachelor’s Degree in history, art history, library science, museum studies or related field.
• Master’s Degree is a plus.
• Ability to work with collection records and computer database over extended periods of time, as well as able to use discretion, maintain confidentiality, and respect donor privacy.
• Capable of working independently with little supervision.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and able to lift 30 pounds.

Required Experience:
• Experience in a museum environment involving collection registrar work and/or collections management, as well as object handling.
• Knowledge of collections handling techniques, as well as AAM-recommended museum practices and ethical standards.
• Experience with collection/documentary photography and construction of basic housing for documents, books, and artifacts.
• Proficiency using collection management software (such as TMS or Past Perfect) and knowledge of museum cataloging standards and registration techniques.
• Knowledge of museum nomenclature is a plus.
• Proficiency in working with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Interest and experience with letterpress printing, graphic design, digital technology and/or library science is a major plus.
